Casino City’s Friday Five: More jackpots and sports betting edition

10 May 2019

We are approaching the one year anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision that PASPA – the federal ban on sports betting – was unconstitutional. Tuesday, 14 May marks one year, and after seeing 10 states regulate and introduce sports betting, more adjustments are being made to regulations and laws from coast to coast.

Also this week, we have several massive jackpot winners, a slots tournament at Intertops Poker and FOX Sports' entrance into the sports betting world.

Let’s kick it off with some paydays:

5. $900,000 jackpot win at South Point Casino
On Wednesday night, Rhonda from California was playing a Wheel of Fortune slot machine at South Point Hotel Casino and Spa in Las Vegas when she hit a jackpot for $954,263.11.

4. IGT awards two massive jackpots in April
International game Technology’s Wheel of Fortune slots and Megabucks slots were very kind in April after two players became millionaires from hitting jackpots.

On 14 April, a Megabucks slot player won $13,154,723 at Sunset Station Hotel and Casino in Henderson, Nevada. This jackpot marks the largest Megabucks jackpot awarded in 2019.

Then, not even two weeks later, on 26 April, a Wheel of Fortune slots player, Robert S., won $1,664,509 at Valley View Casino & Hotel in Valley Center, California.

3. May Slots Tournament at Intertops Poker
Until 12 May, players at Intertops Poker will automatically win tournament points when they play Stampede, Fruit Zen, Sugar Pop 2: Double Dipped and Charms & Clovers from Betsoft.

On Sunday night, the 16 players with the most points will receive a total of $2,000 in prizes, with first place winning $400.

Each spin on these games will award one point.

“We choose player favorites when we plan which games we’ll feature in a tournament,” explained Intertops Poker’s casino manager. “Betsoft is always coming out with great new games. But these four have been consistently popular with players.”

2. Indiana governor signs sports betting bill
Sports betting is coming to Indiana. On Wednesday, Governor Eric Holcomb signed the sports wagering bill that was approved by the state's legislature less than three weeks ago.

It was the final day that Gov. Holcomb could sign; if he did not, the bill would have passed without his signature.

After signing the bill, Holcomb stated, “Gaming is a highly regulated industry that once had little competition, but now does from surrounding states and new technology. By modernizing our laws, this legislation will spur positive economic growth for our state and for an industry that employs over 11,000 Hoosiers. Additionally, it will bring in new revenue and create hundreds of new jobs — both permanent and in construction. I will direct the Indiana Gaming Commission to monitor for potential effects of this bill so that we can make necessary changes in future legislative sessions."

1. FOX Sports to launch US sports betting app
In an agreement with The Stars Group, FOX Sports announced on Wednesday that there are plans to launch FOX Bet, the first-of-its-kind national media and sports wagering partnership in the U.S.

The two organizations expect to release two products this fall. One is a free-to-play game that will award cash prizes to players who correctly predict outcomes of sports games. The other product, named FOX Bet, will give players in states with regulated betting the chance to place real money bets on the outcomes of sporting events.

Eric Shanks, Chief Executive Officer and Executive Producer of FOX Sports, said, “FOX Sports is already synonymous with the best live sports events in the country and now we are expanding the way we immerse fans in the sports culture they love. Digital sports wagering represents a growing market opportunity that allows us to diversify our revenue streams, connect directly with consumers and expand the reach of the FOX Sports brand.”
